Participation of Hornby High School Students in VEGRUN

On the 10th November, Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Christchurch and BLIA South Island held the 2023 VEGRUN, the Global Veg-revival Virtual Community Run which launched by Taiwan iPure Green Foundation. 

The event took place at Hornby High School in Christchurch, with Principal Iain Murray, Vice-Principal Karen Wheeler, and over 230 students participating.

Minister in Charge of FGS South Island, Venerable Juexi, BLIA South Island Vice President James Low, committee member Kokwei Low and two other BLIA members were present to support the students.

This year, the charity event responded to the call “You run, I plant trees” by donating one tree to be planted for every 10 kilometres run. This initiative aimed at environmental conservation, and as a result, 60 trees were donated through the collective running of the teachers and students.

Before the run began, Venerable Juexi shared with the students that the importance of caring for the Earth, emphasizing our collective responsibility for the environment.

Principle Iain, expressed his gratitude to FGS Christchurch Team for arranging the running event on their campus, noting that it promoted physical and mental health, discipline, and environmental awareness among the students. The students felt proud to contribute to environmental protection and found the event meaningful, especially as it connected them with BLIA members worldwide.

After the run, Venerable Juexi gave out apples to the participants and presented a Three Acts of Goodness BLIA Cup Basketball to the school as a token of appreciation. The basketball symbolized the BLIA Cup International Basketball Tournament held at the Headquarters of FGS, Taiwan. FGS New Zealand had sent two teams, both male and female to Taiwan in August this year to participate in the Tournament, and they both won third place. After hearing this, Principal Murray praised FGS for organizing such an event.

Hornby High School hava had good interactions with FGS Buddhist Temple Christchuch for many years and show strong support in the annual 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing and Midfulness event. It has been a significant event for the school, fostering a positive spirit and spreading joy in the local community.

紐西蘭南島佛光山及國際佛光會世界總會紐西蘭南島協會積極推動綠色基金會發起的「全球復蔬公益路跑VEGRUN」活動,11月10日在基督城Hornby高中校內舉行今年的第二場路跑。校長Iain Murray和副校長Karen Wheeler帶領230餘位學生參與。南島佛光山監寺覺西法師、南島協會副會長劉盎齊、理事劉國威共5位佛光人前往為學生加油。今年公益項目響應「你跑步,我種樹」之號召,每10公里捐1棵樹為愛護地球盡一份力,當天在師生們的活力奔跑下共累計了60棵樹的善舉。

開跑前,覺西法師跟參加路跑的學生表示,地球就如我們的母親一樣,提供我們所需的物質養份。為了能讓人類居住的地球能延續生機、走的更長遠,注重環境生態與地球同體共生是每位大眾的責任。法師感謝校方和學生的熱情參與,為環保盡一份力。

學生們在老師的指示下開跑,學生平均都跑了操場兩圈,有的甚至達到六圈及八圈以示支持。新任校長Iain感謝常住特別安排到校園進行路跑活動,表示運動不僅能讓學生身心健康,提高生活紀律也為地球環保盡力,可謂一舉數得。學生們紛紛表示能為地球生態環境努力感到榮幸,同時與全球佛光人跑出愛地球理念,太有意義了。

常住準備吉祥蘋果與學生們結緣,同時贈送三好佛光盃小籃球與校方結緣,表示籃球是紀念本山佛光盃國際籃球賽,希望以球技提昇紀律,同時促進各國學生的交流。紐西蘭也派出男女兩隊前往台灣參加,雙雙榮獲第三名凱旋歸來。校長聽聞後大表讚嘆,再度感謝常住的用心。

Hornby高中與南島佛光山多年來互動良好, 從去年開始參與路跑活動。此外,校方也大力支持一年一度在道場進行的「三好四給人間佛教文化節」,成為學校年度重要活動。校方師生們的熱烈迴響,讓參與者無不感受到正向溫暖的力量,也讓人間佛教扎根本土,歡喜種子遍灑社區。
